Erika Starr Celley has been teaching math in Philadelphia since 2008. Her interest in the education field was sparked as an undergraduate at Barnard College during an amazing seminar on educational equity. Because of her strong belief that education should be a path to social mobility combined with her frustration over the inequity in the status quo, she decided to join the 2008 Teach For America Corps and pursued her Master’s degree at Penn in Urban Education. As a self-proclaimed nerd, school has always been one of Erika’s favorite places. Teaching gives her the opportunity to stay in school as an adult and help others leverage their education as a path to fulfillment and self-sufficiency. When she isn’t teaching math to students, she’s teaching “roll over” and “sit” to either her labradoodle or new baby.
