{"id":696,"date":"2012-11-06T20:11:05","date_gmt":"2012-11-06T20:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/youthbuildphilly.org\/2012\/11\/06\/where-were-from-student-poem-submissions\/"},"modified":"2022-05-16T20:08:30","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T20:08:30","slug":"where-were-from-student-poem-submissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/youthbuildphilly.org\/?p=696","title":{"rendered":"Where We&#8217;re From: Student Poem Submissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Students in Ms. Willa&#8217;s Language Arts class were recently asked to write a poem based on the prompt, &#8220;I am from&#8230;&#8221; \u00a0The resulting poems revealed that we have some gifted &#8211; and courageous &#8211; writers in our midst! \u00a0Two students were kind enough to let us publish their poems online and in our newsletter. \u00a0Thank you Marilynn and Lori!<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>I Am From&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p><em>by Marilynn Boyer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I am from pain<br \/>\nI am from the home where I\u2019m always to blame<br \/>\nI am from the mother who to the streets was a slave<br \/>\nAnd a father who forced me to be brave<br \/>\nI am from knowledge<br \/>\nYet I am from a city where no one goes to college<br \/>\nPotential is wasted because life has denied it<br \/>\nAs a victim to the streets, all there is is hiding<br \/>\nStill I am from freedom<br \/>\nMy history is stronger than me settling for being dumb<br \/>\nOnce I find my path, my family, I will lead them<br \/>\nI will give others hope; something to believe in<br \/>\nI am from pain<br \/>\nBut one day these streets will know my name<br \/>\nPreventing the slain, giving life back to the estranged<br \/>\nAnd finding a way to keep the hate refrained<\/p>\n<h2>Where I\u2019m \u00a0From<\/h2>\n<p><em>by Lori Brown<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I am from a place of love\u00a0and hate.<br \/>\nI am from a place where you must finish your plate.<br \/>\nI am from a place of joy.<br \/>\nI am from a place where the girls are outnumbered by the boys.<br \/>\nI am from a place where you are taught to obey.<br \/>\nI am from a place where you must say yes and not okay.<br \/>\nI am from a place of many colors.<br \/>\nI am from a place where you only worry about yourself and not others.<br \/>\nI am from a place of happiness.<br \/>\nI am from a city that shows no love.<br \/>\nI am from the city of brotherly love.<br \/>\nI am from a mother that tells me to live for the day.<br \/>\nI am from a father that tells me to mean what I say.<br \/>\nI am from an environment that is negative.<br \/>\nI am from an environment that can be positive.<br \/>\nI am from that man above.<br \/>\nI am from a couple that fell in love.<br \/>\nI am from an education system that won\u2019t give help.<br \/>\nI am from the big blue sky.<br \/>\nI am from a world of lies.<br \/>\nI am from a big universe.<br \/>\nI am from a place that can not be rehearsed.<br \/>\nI am from a very confused place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students in Ms. Willa&#8217;s Language Arts class were recently asked to write a poem based on the prompt, &#8220;I am from&#8230;&#8221; \u00a0The resulting poems revealed that we have some gifted &#8211; and courageous &#8211; writers in our midst! \u00a0Two students were kind enough to let us publish their poems online and in our newsletter. \u00a0Thank you Marilynn and Lori!
